The concept of zines have come up for me a lot recently. It started with me finding one in the wild. I think I recently threw it away, which is a shame, I should have digitally preserved it at the very least. When I found it, I didn’t really know what it was. A cute, photocopied but handmade booklet just sitting at the laundromat. It was by a local artist/author, who was advocating for embracing Coos Bay, our home, as the wonderful place that it is and rejecting the ‘this place is terrible’ narrative. It was a beautiful sentiment, and it struck a chord with me.

Since then, @struthless made a bit about zines, and I also maybe came across them as an idea in other areas. I’ve been inspired to create some, now, and I feel overwhelmed with other ‘things I need to get done’ and have been procrastinating it.

Im sitting in the airport right now, which really a display of the worst (ok maybe not the WORST) parts of people. Consumerism, self importance, bad food, disconnection from nature. What better time than to brainstorm some ideas?

I don’t think Zines have to be about one thing. Maybe they can be one time issues, each, or maybe they can have a generalized theme. Either way, here lives a list of ideas that I would love to create:

  • SolarPunk
  • Internet Privacy
  • Getting rid of grass
  • Anti-consumption (minimalism) - Why I don’t use amazon
  • Understanding how you’re controlled
  • Opting out of the surveillance state
  • What to do instead of doomscrolling at the laundromat
  • How to stop using google and microsoft where possible
