What are my values? its easy to confuse our values with one that other people expect from us, also values are things that can change over time.
What would i work toward even if no one else knew about it. values are guiding principles. goals are set and can be achieved. values can conflict with themselves, so you need to find a balance with them.
In the lyra exercise, I settled on top 3 values right now as:
Freedom, Creativity, Spirituality (connection)
Do I feel in line with my values? not really - i feel stifled with my job, even though I have a bit of guilt with feeling that way because its such an awesome job. I also have a lot of ‘shoulds’ associated with it. I do allow myself to find creative outlets so thats good, but I could spend more time on that.
A refelction on my values. The values I settled on here are maybe the opposite to how I’ve lived my life up until recently. I think in the past I have very much valued achievement, or if it wasn’t a value I was driven by it (it may have been external expectations or percieved external expectations). This guiding value sort of led me to live a very strucured life with goals and goal posts. And now for the last four ish years I’ve been trying to change my behavior to actually align with what I think my values are, and it feels uncomfortable. When I try to make choices that allow a bit more freedom and creativity, I panic and make choices that align more with my old behavior patterns (getting a job).
